Help Fight Hunger by Writing to Congress Take Part in This Year’s Offering of Letters
Pope John Paul II once said, “At this moment millions of our brothers and sisters are suffering from hunger, and many are dying of it — especially children! In an age of unprecedented development, of advanced systems and technology, the tragedy of hunger is a great challenge and a great indictment! The earth is capable of feeding everyone…” By writing three simple letters you can help make this happen.
Congress has started drafting reform legislation on the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 which is the legal basis of our government’s overseas aid. Bread for the World, through the 2011 Offering of Letters, is working toward ending hunger in the world by urging Congress and the President to press forward with these reforms and make U.S. foreign assistance more effective in reducing poverty.
This year’s initiative focuses on four ways to make U.S. foreign assistance more effective without increasing the foreign assistance budget. The four ways are:
Over the last decade letters written from this parish as well as Christian churches nationwide, in support of Bread for the World, have helped triple U.S. funding for foreign assistance programs aimed at reducing hunger and poverty as well as promoting economic development in poor countries. These programs do a lot of good. For example, the rate of chronically hungry people in developing countries has fallen from 20 percent to 16 percent.
Thanks to your letters, Bread for the World is able to work with Republicans and Democrats to generate bipartisan support for reforms. Last year alone, more than 1,500 Offerings of Letters took place in churches, campuses, and community settings across the country resulting in over 140,000 letters being written to Congress. Your letters let Congress and the Administration know that the poor are not forgotten.
Time and time again it has been proven that people will seize the opportunity to improve their communities and provide better lives for their children if only given the opportunity. Three letters written by you will help give them that opportunity.
If you cannot see the video shown in the Parish Center today please write a letter to both of your senators and to your congressman. The letters will be collected next week in a basket in the Gathering Space. The number of letters will then be totalled and mailed.
