Religious Education Sacramental Program

"The preparation programs for Baptism, First Penance, First Eucharist and Confirmation should recognize the place of parents as the primary catechists of their children.  The programs should assist the parents in fulfilling their responsibilities."

General Guidelines for the Archdiocese of Newark

To be enrolled in the

Sacramental Preparation Program

for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist:

  • you must be a registered parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Parish.

  • your child must have successfully completed one year of religious education and be currently enrolled in a religious education program at St. Peter's..

  • your child must have a baptismal certificate on file in the Religious Education Office.

  • you must attend the required parent meetings.

First Reconciliation/First Eucharist

According to the Archdiocesan guidelines, the preparation of children for First Reconciliation must take place before and distinct from the preparation for First Eucharist.

Therefore, we prepare our children for First Reconciliation during the first part of the school year and celebrate the Sacrament on a Saturday in January.  Preparation for First Eucharist begins in February and the Sacrament is celebrated at Masses during the Easter Season.

The immediate preparation for these Sacraments is a distinct parish program which strives to incorporate home, school, and community. At home, children work with their parents to complete books, which have been selected to assist the children in a deeper understanding of the Sacrament.  Within community, children attend workshops specifically designed to assist them in their knowledge of the Sacrament and their spiritual preparation for the Sacrament.  These programs are complemented by the graded curriculum in the parochial school or religious education program.

Parents are asked to set an example by receiving these Sacraments often.

The sacrament of Confirmation is administered to candidates of St. Peter the Apostle Parish who have faithfully participated in the preparation period.
