Stained Glass Windows

The Stained Glass windows were added to the church building in 1965. They were created by Simon Berasaluce (1912-1993) a native of the Basque region of Spain, working at the time for Heimer Studios of Clifton, New Jersey. The windows are done in a style popular in the 1960’s that broke with the tradition of portraying realistic figures of Christ and the saints to employ symbols instead.

In our case, seven of our large windows are each dedicated to one of the seven sacraments, the eighth (in the north side, rear) to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The chart below identifies the subject of each window. If you are Catholic, you will be able to figure out much of the symbolism. (The windows provide an interesting tour for our children in religious education, as they try to connect what they have learned about the sacraments with the symbols in the windows.) The two smaller windows nearest the sanctuary portray (in figures this time) the giving of the keys to Peter (see account under “St. Peter Shrine”) and the Second Vatican Council, just being completed as the windows were created. Portrayed in the council window are Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI, the popes who led the Council, creating a parallel with Peter, the first pope, receiving the symbolic keys in the window opposite.
