"The New Saint Peter's"

In late 1997 the parish decided to mark the fiftieth anniversary of its founding in 1948 by initiating a renovation of the interior of the church and the construction of an addition.

The original parish complex, completed in 1952, made “temporary” use of the school auditorium as a church. A proper church was to be built later. The new renovation was designed to finally complete the dreams of the founders of the parish, though not in the way they anticipated. Fifty years of liturgical life had consecrated the “temporary” church in the hearts of parishioners and successive renovations had added stained glass windows and other church features to the original space. With the advice of a Restoration Committee set up to advise the pastor, it was decided to restore and enhance the interior (it had last been painted and renovated twenty years earlier), and to build an addition. A new entrance that would give our building the church appearance it had always lacked was a key element of the design. The new construction would also allow us to add several features to support the expanding ministries of the parish.

Anthony Genovese, AIA, of Ridgewood, a well-known and long experienced liturgical architect, was selected to design the renovation and addition. In 1965 Genovese had been selected to design the papal altar in Yankee Stadium for the visit of Pope Paul VI, the first visit of a pope to this country. Exactly 30 years later, Genovese was again chosen to design the altar at Giant Stadium for the visit of Pope John Paul II.

A parish capital campaign, entitled “Forward In Faith,” in the fall of 1998 went well over goal. Construction began with groundbreaking in December, 1999. The worship space was completed in time for the Paschal Triduum of 2000, and the entire project was blessed by Archbishop McCarrick in November, 2000, during the Holy Year of the Great Jubilee. With this project we celebrate three Jubilees: the Golden Jubilee of the founding of this parish, the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 and the Fiftieth Anniversary of the completion of the church, school and other parish buildings in 1952.

You are now looking at the results: what we like to call the “New Saint Peter’s,” building new upon the old, building the new for a new future.
