Youth Center

This same area contains the Youth Minister’s
Office and the entrance to the Youth Center, which is home to our parish
teen group. The Youth Center is dedicated to the memory of Major Ross E.
Mulhare, who grew up in the parish, and died in the service of his country
in 1986 as a test pilot for the newly developed Stealth fighter planes.
Shrine of St. Peter the
Apostle

As you proceed through the Gathering Space into the Lower Gallery, you
will see on the left wall the shrine of the patron saint of the parish,
St. Peter the Apostle. A fisherman by trade, known by the name Simon from
birth, a leader by nature, Peter has his name changed and his life turned
upside down by Jesus, who calls him to follow him. (see John 1:35-42;
Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11.) Peter leaves all to follow the Master. He
would travel the length of the known world in years to come, carrying the
gospel to Rome itself, where he would become the first bishop of the
imperial capital, and suffer martyrdom there. The Bishop of Rome, the
pope, is his successor as leader of the church of that city and of the
“catholic” or “world-wide” church.
The gospels’ portrait of Peter is the most fully developed of all the
twelve members of Jesus’ inner circle, called “apostles” (in Greek, “those
sent forth”). He is brash, foot-in-mouth, by turns loyal and cowardly,
believing and doubting. He is so very human; he is each of us in our many
modes. That’s why we love having him as our patron saint.
To such a flawed yet faith-filled person, Jesus entrusted the leadership
of his band of disciples and eventually the Church that would rise,
Spirit-breathed, after Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus always seems to choose
the weak, and makes them strong in bearing witness. Jesus made his choice
clear, when he said in Matthew 16:13-19, “You are Peter, and upon this
rock I will build my church….I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever
you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” In our carved wood statue,
Peter is identified by the crossed keys he carries.
