Saint Peter's Doors

Returning to the Lower Gallery, you now stand before a set of etched glass doors depicting scenes from the life of Saint Peter. The doors, commissioned for the church in 1981, were the last work of Charles Vukovich of Maywood. Mr. Vukovich was an artist, sculptor and teacher, whose work can be seen both locally (“The Soldier,” in River Edge Veterans’ Park) and nationally. Among his most important works are the stained glass windows at Dunbarton College, today the Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.

Our doors picture the Call of Saint Peter (center doors, Matthew 4: 18-22 - Jesus calls Peter from his fishing nets to become his disciple). The left doors show the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-13 - Peter witnesses Jesus transfigured in light, revealing his hidden glory). Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane is the theme of the right doors (Matthew 26:30-46 - Peter sleeps despite Jesus’ desperate plea, “Could you not watch one hour with me?” as Jesus prays for strength to face his death the following day.)
