We Are His Witnesses: Parish Listening Sessions Recap & Model Feedback Form
(One-pager from the November 9th bulletin; please use text below for mobile devices and screen readers)
We Are His Witnesses is a renewal initiative launched by Cardinal Tobin in 2025 to help our Archdiocese’s 212 parishes respond to a changing reality: while our population continues to grow, the number of priests is rapidly declining — with only 127 under age 50 and fewer than 131 pastors expected by 2044. As Mass attendance and sacramental participation decrease across the NorthEast, this initiative calls us to listen, discern, and work together to share Christ’s love and strengthen our parishes for a vibrant future.
About 200 parishioners attended the Parish Listening Sessions on October 21 & 23, 2025 — thank you! Discussions were held with open minds and hearts, emphasizing that local culture and community ties should guide future models.

What Was Proposed
A draft “model” that combines the 212 parishes into 111 “pastorates” — groups of parishes led by the same pastor, sharing resources and ministry
This fist draft sought feedback on a pastorate between St. Peter’s + Our Lady of the Visitation (Paramus) + Annunciation (Paramus)
Top Feedback Shared
Desire to remain a standalone parish — citing St. Peter’s strength, growth and recent momentum, suggesting that we first be given a goal to meet
Additional Feedback Noted
Alternative combinations with St. Peter’s based on community, geography, or other ties:
St. Joseph (Oradell) — Most popular option due to the joint school district that sets ground for youth evangelization
St. Joseph (Oradell) + Ascension (New Milford)
St. Joseph (Oradell) + Visitation (Paramus)
Holy Trinity (Hackensack)
Queen of Peace (Maywood)
Concerns with pastorates: straining existing strong programs, disrupting vitality
Concerns with the Paramus proposal: size disparities, travel challenges, lack of shared community identity
Encouragement to all be everyday evangelists
Top Areas of Unknown Raised
Assignments of pastors and sharing of properties, finances and resources
Organization of ministries/programs
Mass schedules
Metrics and rationale behind the models
Addressing root cause of priest shortages
