On June 27, 2025, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, a celebration was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Consecration of the Diocese of Newark to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1875. The celebration began with a long line of pilgrims who walked from Saint Patrick's Pro-Cathedral in Newark (the original seat of the Diocese, where Fr. Camilo Cruz is now rector) to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, followed by a Holy Mass celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Michael Saporito, who said in his homily,
“There is no better time than now to set our houses of worship on fire with the divine love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Let us begin tonight, all of us, by rededicating our lives to the Sacred Heart of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us give him our whole hearts — even the broken parts of our hearts — and allow them to find rest in Christ… Let us work with Jesus in becoming people who restore goodness and beauty in the world.”
To continue the celebration, the Basilica has been inviting choirs from across the Diocese to provide music at select masses throughout the year. On Saturday, November 29th, St. Peter's Adult Choir, under the direction of Jim Gregory, has the honor of being the guest choir at the 5:00 PM Mass. You are invited and encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there!
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located at 89 Ridge St, Newark, NJ 07104.
